Work it out Weekend– Preparing for War(rior Dash)

I was browsing Facebook a few weeks ago and saw pictures of some of friends covered in mud with big cheesy grins on their faces. They had just participated in an obstacle course race and for some reason, I was inspired to do the same. I found the next race in my area, the Warrior Dash, and registered.  It’s not anywhere near as difficult as the Tough Mudder, but I figure it’s a nice starting point for future races. I knew pole dancing and spinning classes alone weren’t going to get me ready for this. So I printed off the training schedule. Wowzers! For you fellow Budgetistas who want to start getting in shape before the holidays, but don’t want to add the monthly expense of a gym membership to their budget, here’s an inexpensive, at home workout courtesy of Tommy Hoke and the Warrior Dash.
What you’ll need:

Running or cross training shoes
Jump rope
Chair
Stop watch (or a cell phone with a stop watch feature)
Yoga mat
Access to a staircase
Calendar

On your calendar, list out the workouts and rest days for the full 12 weeks. Notice your workouts will intensify as the weeks go along. Runs get longer. Rest between circuits becomes shorter and you will do more rotations over time. Note these on your calendar! Make sure you allot enough time each day for your workout, no excuses. Once you’ve mastered these workouts, do one of two things to avoid a plateau: A) add weights to the exercises in the circuit, or B) move up to the next Warrior level.
Whether you decide to compete in a race in the future or if you’re just looking to do something different with your workout, find the Warrior in you!

Tasty Tuesday – Clean Slate, the only way to eat

Have you ever noticed the infomercials for the magic diet pills? I’m not even going to lie, the before and after pictures make me want to pick up the phone and order a lifetime supply. But then I notice the small print at the bottom of the screen. These folks are losing two pounds per week and (my favorite part) with a healthy diet and exercise. Now, just pause with me for a second. Everyone wants to lose weight and lose it as quickly as possible. Instant gratification is key in our society. We buy into the idea that by taking a particular pill, the pounds will melt off and we’ll be back in our high school letterman’s jacket in no time. Unfortunately it just doesn’t work that way. According to the Center for Disease Control, the best way to lose weight and keep it off is by following a diet and exercise plan in which weight loss averages 1 to 2 pounds per week. Notice that nowhere in that statement is the mention of a magic pill. As a fitness professional (thank you, AFAA) I’ve found that weight loss is 80% what you eat and 20% what you do. If you eat a clean healthy diet and do nothing, you’ll inevitably lose weight. But if you eat garbage and work out moderately, as is suggested by the medical community, chances are you’re wasting your efforts because you won’t see any results.

Since it’s Tasty Tuesday, we’re going to talk about step one in the weight loss battle – the healthy diet. If you ever tune into Dr. Oz, The Doctors, or Biggest Loser, you’ll often hear mention of “eating clean.” I’m sure you’re wondering what, exactly, that means. It’s rather simple. Avoid any and all processed foods. If it didn’t have a face or you couldn’t pick it from a tree or bush and put it directly in your mouth, don’t eat it. Think of yourself as an ancient nomad. If all of the infrastructure of our world were gone, the fast food joints, the microwaves, the cheesy poofs, what on earth would we do to sustain ourselves? We’d hunt and we’d gather. But since we don’t live in a forest, there is a way to “hunt and gather” in your local supermarket.

Think of your supermarket at a forest – If you were in the forest hunting, would you want to risk getting lost and go deep into the forest to find your next meal, or would you take the easy route and stay around the perimeter? Same concept applies for food shopping. If you stick to the outermost walls of the grocery store and avoid the aisles, you’ll instantly omit the processed garbage out of your diet.

If you pick it, it will be clean – If it grew from a tree, a bush, a plant or a vine, you can bet that it’s a-ok to consume. But with fruits and vegetables peaking in different seasons, making them more expensive during certain parts of the year, how can you stay within budget? One way is to only eat what’s in season. You can do your research know what peaks when, or you can let the experts of a company like Fresh Box Organics do the work for you. Best part about them is that they deliver! Option B: buy frozen. These fruits and veggies are picked at their peak and flash frozen for optimal freshness. They also tend to be cheaper than the fresh version and they’re available year round.

Welcome, Fresh Meat – Protein is essential to any diet, as it provides the building blocks for muscle as well as helps keep you full. But, of course, there are few things to keep in mind about the meats you select. First, keep them lean. The less fat, the better. Fish is full of Omega-3 fatty acids, which are wonderful for your health. A three ounce serving of boneless skinless turkey breast has only 1 gram of fat. Second, the fresher, the better. Though it can be tempting to buy the pre-seasoned cuts of meat in the butcher department of the grocery store, avoid it at all cost. If you don’t know what’s in it, don’t get it. Plus, those cuts are more expensive because of the extra 5 minutes it took for the butcher to season it himself. Save yourself the money and the potential pitfalls in your diet and just do it yourself.

Get down with brown – Grains, that is. Grains are good for you. They’re chock full of tons of nutrients and fiber that fill you up with few calories. There are such things as good carbs, and these are them! Stick to brown rice, quinoa and oats (the kind in the canister, not the flavored kind) and steer clear of anything white. Remember, if it’s refined, it just means it went through a whole lot of steps to get to be that point.

Satisfying the sweet tooth – I LOVE sweets. They’re my weakness. Thank heavens that Mother Earth loves them too. She made agave, honey, and stevia, just to name a few, to satisfy my need for sweets. Cutting refined sugar out of your diet will do wonders for your waistline. With these natural sweeteners, you don’t have to sacrifice much of what you love to achieve great results.

Motivated Monday – Stuff and Stings

Lord knows how much I love technology. And I especially love how my home church in Metro Atlanta posts sermons on their virtual campus. Here is a video of a sermon that really touched me. Regardless of your religious beliefs, you have to understand a few things. Cows produce milk. Bees make honey. Both are things we want to have in our personal utopia. But cows also make “stuff” (instert four-letter word here) and bees will sting. You must know that sometimes, you must get through the “stuff” and the stings before you can get to the milk and honey. Enjoy, laugh, meditate and make it a wonderful Monday.

First Date Friday – Ayo, I started using technology

Recently I did something I never thought I would do. I joined an online dating site. Now, as you’re gasping, let me explain. I work full time, as many of you do as well, and I spend most of my free time at the gym (which, as you all know, is a women’s only fitness studio), making it rather difficult to meet members of the opposite sex. As a serial monogamist, I decided to hop on the dating train for a bit, just to see what it was like. Why online dating, you ask? Well, there are a few reasons. For starters, there’s something kind of off about meeting someone in a bar or club. And with our isolated society, no one is going to approach you in a grocery store or a coffee shop. So I figured I’d use technology to my advantage and see what the online dating scene is like. First Date Fridays will not only chronicle some of my first dates, but also give you great tips on planning your own dates, from where to go, what to do and even what to wear.

But today, I’d like to have a chat with those ladies and gentlemen who are in the same boat as I am. To my fellow online daters, I’d like to impart some knowledge on how to have a gratifying experience in the online dating pool. Follow these tips and you could possibly avoid a few headaches.

  1. A picture is worth way more than a thousand words – As I’ve said time and time again, people will ALWAYS judge a book by its cover. Chose pictures that will make a person what to continue to read the rest of your profile. I’m not saying they have to be professional pictures that have been retouched and photoshopped and all that craziness, because, let’s face it, as much as we’d love it, there is no “real-life-shop”, so choose pictures that show the real you. Smile! And as your main photo, I’d discourage you from using an action shot or a group picture. It just confuses people. Yeah, I know some of you are like “Well, I shouldn’t be judged on my looks alone. I have a great personality, blah blah blah.” Honey, something’s gotta catch their attention and normally, the headline’s not it. We’re a very visually stimulated society. So stimulate them! But please, have some class and refrain from posting racy pictures. That just sends the wrong message. Leave a little something to the imagination to get the respect you deserve.
  2. Be your own border patrol – There are always going to be some sleaze balls prowling online dating sites. You can filter some of those out of your experience with a few simple clicks of the mouse. For most sites, you can set parameters for who can contact you. If you’re like me and refuse to date a smoker, then, guess what? No messages from them! Think about what you are willing to tolerate and those things which are non-negotiables and save yourself the drama associate with the deal breaker conversation.
  3. Let them see your true colors shining through – The actual information on your profile is just as important as the pictures you choose, in my opinion. The picture may get them to click on your profile, but what is going to motivate someone to continue reading? A pretty face can only get you so far. The substance of your personality is what ultimately keeps the person interested.  If there is one tip that I can give you when you begin to compose your profile it’s this (and I don’t think I’ll be able to say this enough) – BE HONEST! Tell prospective daters who you are, what you like, what you don’t like, and what you’re looking for. Be specific and straight forward. It’s easy to tell who took the time to read the whole thing and who is genuinely interested in you versus the sketchy person who was just interested in your pants.
  4. I don’t see nothin’ wrong with not replying, baby – You’re not going to buy an outfit looks “just ok” on you, right? And you definitely wouldn’t pay your hard earned dollars on something that was simply hideous. So why waste your precious time replying to a message from someone you’re not interested in? Seriously, it’s not going to hurt anyone’s feelings. As a matter of fact, I’ve come across individuals who send the exact same message to a slew of people all at once. If you want to be polite and let the individual know you’re not interested, then great. Kudos to you. I’ve tried that and it opened up a can of worms (“But why don’t you like me?” and “Who are you to judge me without even giving me a chance? Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera *insert violin music here*). It all boils to what I explained above. Yes, your pretty face may have initially attracted me to you, but the fact that you can’t spell to save your life, use poor grammar, are extremely superficial in your profile, and approached me with inappropriate vernacular will make me click the delete button. I know what I like and what I don’t like. And if you do, too, then feel free to do the same. Trust me. At the end of the day, you not responding to someone’s message isn’t going to devastate their existence on earth.
Go forth and match, fish, harmonize and spark some chemistry with folks, boys and girls! Have a great weekend!

Tasty Tuesday – From Kisha’s Kitchen to yours!

A great friend of mine and fellow health and wellness enthusiast, Kisha Garcia, author of Fresh Fit Life, is an AMAZING cook. Just seeing pictures of what she’s concocted will make your mouth water. Best part of it all? It’s super good for you too. So even though she’s thousands of miles away and I miss her terribly, I wanted to share a little piece of one of my favorite parts of Kisha – her cooking skills.

♥  - The Bougie Budgetista

I can’t even tell you how much I LOVE polenta. I found this recipe in the October 2011 issue of Muscle & Fitness Hers.  I did adjust the recipe to what I had at home.  Ah, the magic of cooking!

Italian Chicken & Polenta Casserole
18oz precooked “tube” polenta
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp thyme
2 diced Roma tomatoes
1/2 cup all-natural marinara sauce
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
10 oz cooked chicken breast, cut into bite-size pieces
1/4 cup low-fat ricotta cheese
1/4 cup part-skim shredded mozzarella
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
2. Coat medium pot with cooking spray and place on medium heat. Add garlic, oregano, and thyme. Cook for one minute, being careful not to burn the garlic (stir!).  Stir in tomatoes, marinara sauce, vinegar, and chicken. Bring to a soft boil, then reduce heat and cover, simmering for 15 minutes.
3. Meanwhile, slice polenta in 1/2 inch slices. You should end up with 9 slices, not including the end pieces. Coat an 8×8-inch baking dish with cooking spray and place slices in a single layer.
4. Spoon half of the sauce mixture over polenta. Drop ricotta cheese by the teaspoon over sauce. Add remaining sauce and sprinkle with shredded mozzarella.
5. Bake covered with aluminum foil for 15 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 10 minutes.
6. Enjoy!

Motivated Monday - Don’t call it a comeback!

Hello lovies! I know you’ve missed your daily dose of the Bougie Budgetista because I know I’ve missed you too. In my writing sabbatical, I’ve come to experience many things and meet some AMAZING people. My vision has had a few revisions and now I’m back and better than ever! As some of my readers would say, I’m “down right motivated”!

So here’s the scoop – I met an amazing writer named Ashley Cisneros who has, for lack of a better phrase, lit a fire under my butt. She, like so many others I’ve come across, risked it all for her dreams, leaving a secure position in her field to explore new, more fruitful ventures. She’s now her own boss working on her own terms. A perfect portrait of a hustler, if you ask me. She has encouraged me to get back on my rock star status and write, write, write my way to my goal of working in my field while pursuing my passion in the fitness world. This project works in phases.

Phase one: Take your vision and make revisions

I had the opportunity to sit down with Ashley for brunch and just talk. Granted, we talked about everything from school to weddings to business ventures, successes and failures, and (most importantly) the lessons learned from it all. During our talk, I learned the importance of the “Everything but the kitchen sink” resume (officially known as a curriculum vitae, for you fancy folks) and tailor each resume to the position you’re applying for. Make your experience align with the job description to give yourself a leg up against the competition. Needless to say, I smacked my forehead and thought, “Now, why didn’t I think of that?” You know you can do it. You know you have the knowledge and skills to make that happen. Now think about all the qualifications you have to help you achieve your goal and put it on paper. Think about all the necessary steps you’ll need to take to get to finish line.

Phase two: You better (Net)Work, Honey!

I’ll admit, I’m not the best networker in the world. But I know people who are! And, believe you me, knowing is half the battle. Ashley, on the other hand, is a master at this art form. So, whether you’re a wall flower like me or a social butterfly like Ashley, the one thing we both recommend you do is get some business cards. You can make them yourself at home or have them professionally done. If you’re going to go the print route, I must recommend VistaPrint. They have amazing deals and wonderful customer service. Plus, what makes a bigger impression – ridges on your flimsy card and off center print, or 500 uniform, print quality cards that you only paid shipping for?

Phase three: Lights, Camera, and Plan of Action

Once you’ve figured out all the steps and possible side steps needed and met some key players in helping you achieve your goal, you now have to put your plan into action. Don’t have an action plan? Make one! Be it a vision board or a business plan or a mantra on a post-it on your bathroom mirror, you MUST have a visual representation of what you’re working towards. It’s a constant reminder that every single day, what you’re doing is getting you closer to where you want to be.

Through Ashley, I’ve met some wonderfully talented people. Where I lack, they have and vice versa. There is the potential for some seriously successful partnerships to flourish. But right now, I must focus on my writing. After all, that was step one in my master plan. If I am going to touch as many people as possible with my story and my passions, then I must write.

Time Out Tuesday - Reflecting On The Past Few Weeks And Revising My Vision

I’ve been in a bit of a funk lately, lovies. I haven’t even been in the mood to write, which is wretched, considering that it’s one of the few things that makes me feel fulfilled. I look around to other writers that I admire and I ask myself, how do they do it? They come up with original material every day, and often material that leaves me smacking my forehead wonder why I didn’t think of that. I’m not quite sure what happened. I was on a roll. The daily posts flowed from my mind through my fingers onto the computer screen effortlessly. I provided readers with everything they asked for (for those who asked, anyway). But then, I hit a wall and I couldn’t figure out how to get around it. This was the most intense writer’s block I’ve ever encountered. Nothing could pull me out of it. Not a single idea I came up with could manifest itself into a full, coherent article. I began to doubt my abilities as a writer. Seriously. I could no longer do the one thing I KNEW without a shadow of a doubt that I was good at. What on earth was wrong with me?

A new passion has been consuming my life. As much as I would love to make a living writing and styling, the fitness world has filled me with an intense joy that is incomparable to anything I’ve ever experienced. Maybe it’s the endorphins, I don’t know, but it feels really, really good. As you all know, I got my Zumba certification and shortly after met a woman who has inspired me to push myself even further in the fitness world. Her name is Leslie Davila, co-founder of No Excuses Fitness and Dance, and when I tell you this chick is a hustler, it’s no joke. She is on her grind, teaching 10 classes per week and changing so many lives in the process. Her energy is addicting, her smile contagious. And her story touches you like none other. I feel blessed that she’s taken me under her wing and is showing me the ropes of what being a successful fitness instructor is all about. She’s also inspired me to pursue my Personal Training and Group Fitness Certifications. If you’re going to do something, do it right. Go balls to the wall and be a close to a subject matter expert as you can be. Like Leslie says, “No Excuses.”

So now, here I am, the Bougie Budgetista, lover of all things fashion and frugality related, obsessed with fitness. One day dedicated to the subject matter just isn’t enough! We’re going to have to re-evaluate the direction of the blog and make it fit my passions… Yes, passions, PLURAL. In the process, I hope to be able to inspire you to get up, dust yourself off, and make a plan of action to making your dreams come true. Anticipate posts by fellow fitness lovers, shoe addicts, foodies and more. I’ll be introducing you to some really special people who have fresh takes on the world around us. And I’ll be encouraging you to try new things, read new books, watch new films, and think outside the box. The goal is to live a fabulous life without breaking the bank, right? Well, my fabulosity doesn’t just stop where my closet begins. It’s time to rethink what a fulfilled, fantastic life looks like. And as much as Red Bottoms are a part of that vision, it’s not the only vision dancing through my head.

Fashion Friday - J's Everday Fashion for the Everyday Fashionista

Happy Friday, lovies! It’s the beginning of the month, spring is nearly here (if you’re in Florida, like I am, it’s been here for a while, but that’s neither here nor there), and it’s time to put the sweaters and coats and scarves away for the year! Aren’t you excited? Bright colors. Breezy sun dresses. Linen pants. Wait. You don’t have any of that in your closet? It doesn’t fit anymore because you’ve been sticking to your workout plan? Buying a whole new wardrobe isn’t financially feasible? Are you kidding? As a Budgetista, I can’t even think of those words without shuddering. Where there’s a fashionable will, there’s a fabulous way. And I have found just the remedy for that problem.

A few weeks ago, I came across a blog and instantly fell in love. J’s Everyday Fashion helps women just like you and I, who know that the world is our runway, make financially savvy decisions on what to stock our closets with and how to put ensembles together that look effortless yet fashion forward. I love how she takes looks straight out of the fashion magazines, recreates them, then tells you where AND when she got the pieces (because I always wonder if it’s still in stores), how much they cost, and how to edit them to suit you. She outlines how to take a look from day to night with a few simple swaps. And best of all, J thinks outside the box. Some of the things that are hot on the runway have probably been sitting in your closet for a few seasons because you have no idea how to work it into your wardrobe. It’s as simple as taking what you already have, adding a few inexpensive pieces, and viola! Your closet has been transformed. It’s all around fabulous! I could learn a lot from her… And so could you! Check her out!

Work It Out Wednesday - Getting Over A Plateau

Happy Hump Day, lovies! In today’s edition of Work It Out Wednesday I’d like to talk about my struggles getting over my personal hump – the dreaded plateau.

Over a month, I’ve been stuck at the same weight. I’ve had my normal little fluctuations, but my  morning weight was pretty consistent. I just didn’t get it. I was working out 10-15 hours per week. I limited my calorie intake, steering clear of all the things like fried foods, white starches and alcohol, and upped my fruit and vegetable intake. All the while, I’m thinking to myself “Man, these last few pounds are going to melt off!” Little did I know that it wouldn’t be that easy.

After a few weeks and no significant decline in the scale later, I approached my spinning instructor Nita from Vixen Fitness and vented about my weight loss plight. You see, Nita is a nurse and has been in the fitness industry for years, so if there’s anyone I should be asking about breaking through a rough spot, it’s her. After a few minutes of hashing through my daily workouts, meal plan, and supplement intake, we came to find out that I just wasn’t eating enough. At 26 years old, my metabolism is on fire compared to hers, and with all the stress I’m putting my body under by hitting the gym 2 hours a night, I wasn’t fueling the machine properly. Don’t ask me why eating more makes you lose weight, but it does. Now, that’s not to say that you can just eat whatever you want and not work out. And just in case you thought I was condoning that, I’m not. I repeat, YOU CANNOT EAT WHATEVER YOU WANT, NOT WORK OUT AND EXPECT WEIGHT LOSS! There is a balance.

WeightWatchers is a great tool to use, but if you don’t have the means to pay the meetings membership or the online subscription, check out LoseIt.com. It’s the same principle – make note of calories in (what you eat) versus calories out (what you burn working out) and find your deficit. The program will encourage you to replenish your daily calories burned to make sure your body is well fueled and you have the proper weekly deficit.

Sometimes when you hit a plateau, you just have to switch things up.  Reduce your carb intake for a week. Try a new work out. Work out at a different time of the day. Keep your body guessing and the pounds melting off!

Happy Losing!

Work It Out Wednesday - Preparing For My First Zumba Class!

When I went to Zumba Instructor Training, Beto (THE Zumba guy), told us there's no point in reinventing the wheel. The same basic moves are used over and over and over again in different combinations, directional variations, fitness variations and so much more. And I shouldn't be afraid to borrow bits and pieces of other people's choreography, then add my own flair. On Tuesday, I'll be leading a song in another instructor's class at Vixen. Though the routine is going to be a surprise, for the most part, here is an instructor out of Baltimore  that I admire. Don't be surprised if you see something similar to this in my first class.

Fashion Friday - The First Lady Rockin' A Frugal Frock, And Still Looking Fab

As I was checking my email I came across an article that made me stop in my tracks. “Michelle Obama wows in a $35 dress.” I instantly had to give my BFF the heads up about it. Her response: “You a damn liar!” Seriously. She was on the Today Show in a dress from H&M and it looked like a million bucks! A few styling edits and BAM! A phenomenal dress to fit her wonderful sense of style.

Regardless of your political affiliation, you have to admit, the First Lady has an impeccable sense of style that we haven’t seen since Jackie O. She appeals to the everyday woman and has become quite the fashion muse. If you’ve noticed, she’s not a brand snob. We’ve seen her in Target, J. Crew, White House Black Market, and now H&M. One thing is clear about Mrs. Obama’s personal style - It’s not about following trends or wearing big name designers. It’s about knowing who you are, what looks good on your body and what makes you feel good. PERSONAL style. It doesn’t matter who you wear, it’s HOW you wear it.

My best friend said it best, “Whether it's a $2000 dress or a $20 dress it doesn't matter it's all about how you wear it and how it fits your personal style.”

So find what works for you. Try different looks and trends and styles until you find what best fits YOU.

Thrifty Thursday - A Valentine's Day for One

This year, I am without a Valentine. So instead of participating in Singles Awareness Day (S.A.D.), a day chock full of misery and despair, I decided to treat myself extra special for the day. Lots of restaurants are going to have great deals on dinner for two, and that’s fine and dandy, but I’m not in the mood to hang around a whole bunch of sappy couples. I’ll be enjoying an at-home spa day instead.

The first step is to plan your day. Well, mine won’t be a whole day, but more like an evening, consisting of a facial, body scrub, hair treatment, a hot bath, and a yummy and healthy dinner. If you have the ability to make it a whole day, throw in an early morning workout and plan healthy meals throughout the day. Prepare yourself for your day. Make sure your favorite robe, PJs, slippers, and workout clothes are clean and put somewhere easy to get to. Pull out your favorite candles and dim the lights in your bathroom and bedroom. Have clean sheets on your bed and your fluffiest towels right by your tub. Spray them with your favorite fragrance and indulge in your senses.

Next, prepare your treatments. You can do a search for different treatments or just visit The Spa Index to browse recipes and find whatever floats your boat. Here are the ones I’m going to be enjoying:

For the face, a Honey Oatmeal Facial, courtesy of The Spa Index:

1/4 cup plain yogurt or buttermilk
1/2 cup oatmeal
2 tablespoons of honey

Finely grind or process the oatmeal in a blender or food processor. Set aside. In a small bowl, stir together honey and yogurt, and then add ground oatmeal. Mix thoroughly until a smooth paste consistency has been reached. Smooth over your face and neck, leave on for fifteen minutes, and rinse off with warm water.

For the body, I was given a homemade body scrub a while back, so I’ll be using that, but this recipe is very similar:

2/3 cup brown sugar, packed
1/3 - 1/2 cup almond oil
1/2 tsp of vitamin E
45-60 drops of fragrance or essential oil

Mix almond oil, vitamin E and fragrance or essential oil together in a glass bowl. Add the brown sugar and mix in well. Gently scrub over skin, focusing on rougher areas, such as elbows, feet, and knees. Rinse with warm water and pat dry.

For the hair, I’m actually using a sample from Lush called Hair Doctor, but this is one that my friends and family frequently use:

1 banana
3 tbsp honey
1/2 cup olive oil
1 vitamin E capsule
2 tbsp of Mayo

In a small bowl smash up one banana and add the honey, olive oil, mayo, and then empty the vitamin E capsule into the bowl. Stir with a spoon. Mix it all together really well. Then pour all of the contents of the bowl into a blender and puree till creamy and smooth. Leave in hair for 30 minutes and then rinse.

I can’t help buy indulge myself just a little bit. So I bought everything that I needed to make Mermaid Water. The Big Blue Bath Bomb was $6.35 and the Sunny Side Bubble Bar was $6.95, and I know I’m going to get at least three baths out of them, so that’s a good deal. And finally, I’m going to jazz up what’s already in my freezer and make a petit steak dinner with rosemary roasted potatoes and steamed veggies. Valentine’s day seems like a great day to show love to the one person on the planet who deserves it the most… YOURSELF!

Work It Out Wednesday - The Power of Pole

Last week, I talked about my experiences at Vixen Fitness. Today, I’d really like to go in depth with regards to my progress in Pole Fitness. Prior to January 22nd, the most I had ever done as far as working out was concerned was Zumba and running. Strength training wasn’t very appealing to me. I couldn’t stand the idea of sitting at the gym on a machine or lifting dumbbells up and down, up and down. How boring is that? I’m all about a workout that doesn’t necessarily feel like a work out, and Pole fit right up my alley.

When I first started, I could barely hold my own body weight up on a pole. I felt like such a weakling. Before the feeling of defeat could set in, I signed up for another class. I was determined not to quit after one try. “You’ll be sore tomorrow” they told me. That was the understatement of the century. I could barely move my arms above my head but the next day, I worked through the pain and tried it again. Quickly, I realized my muscles were getting used to it and I could hold on longer. I watched other girls around me easily try a new trick, shimmying their way up the pole. But I still couldn’t climb. My body wouldn’t let me do it. I heaved a sigh of sadness, thinking “I may never get this”.

In between one pole class and another, I’d take different fitness classes that challenged my body in different ways. Here I was in Sexercise banging out push-ups like they were nothing. Eureka! After just two classes, I could see a difference in my strength! I was rather shocked because I couldn’t necessarily SEE a difference, but there it was. Upper body strength that popped out of nowhere. That night, I rushed home and signed up for more pole classes.

After a three more classes, I was faced with the dreaded Advanced Fireman Spin – a trick which required me to climb up the pole. Despite the fact that my hands were covered in antiperspirant, I felt them getting clammy. I was nervous that, once again, the pole would defeat me. It was my turn to go on the pole and miraculously, up I went nearly effortlessly. I did it.

The moral of this story is that you’ll find that some of the most unconventional fitness regiments can be challenging, but if you’re up for the challenge, you’re going to see change. It may not be instantaneous. You may not see it in the mirror. But you will FEEL it. You will see it in your abilities. Before you know it, you’re doing things you never thought you could do. Next goal – Inverts!

A Budget-Friendly Birthdaycation Extravaganza

This past weekend, my best friend Shawntel of SOA Event Concepts came to visit me here in Orlando for her birthday weekend. I was forewarned that the budget was going to be tight for the weekend, so I had to prepare my budgetista skills to squeeze a dollar out of a dime and have a FANTASTIC time. Here is the breakdown of our fabulous BFFcation, and some of the killer deals we scored.

Friday night, we went to a swanky restaurant in Winter Park. I liken that area to Buckhead in Atlanta, back in the day. Some of the entrees on Luma’s menu were a little on the exotic (and pricey) side, but the ambiance was well worth it. So what do you do when you want to experience poshness, but don’t necessarily have a posh budget? Order off the appetizer menu, of course! When I was in high school working at Plato’s Closet, my co-workers and I would get together for appetizers and desserts, to a) not spend a lot of cash, and b) have a quality girls night out. Think about it - Appetizers are normally large enough to share and reasonably priced. Typically, you’re not going to find an appetizer over $20 on any menu. We opted for the fancy pizza. It was delicious! We saved our splurge for their incredible wine selection. A glass ranged anywhere from $6 to $12, but the selection was astounding. The first night was a great success.

Saturday, we attended a class at Vixen Fitness, which I will elaborate on tomorrow’s edition of Work It Out Wednesday and enjoyed lunch at Crave, an American fusion bistro. When I tell you this place is awesome, it’s an understatement. The décor is chic, but welcoming. The staff is by far some of the best I’ve ever come in contact with. And the food is to die for! Try the lamb burger. I promise you, you won’t regret it. The best part of it all was that we had an ODeals Daily certificate for $30. I only paid $15 for it a few weeks ago. The key to a great trip is preparing in advance with the deal sites. Let THEM decide where you’ll be dining on your vacation and save up to 50% on your tab. Just be nice to your server and tip on the full amount for the service you receive. Our server Blake was worth 40%. Just saying…

No BFF rendezvous is complete without a shopping trip. But not just any shopping trip. We hunt for super sales, deals and steals, and a gem of a find. By the looks of it, it was a great success. Check out her Max and Cleo dress, purchased from Dechoes for $14.99 and my Charlotte Russe romper for just $9.99.

Max and Cleo Dress

Charlotte Russe Romper

Sunday should have been a beach day, but it was cold and rainy, so we did some window shopping instead (but still managed to come away with some loot). What? Come away with look when you window shop? Who does that?!?!? We do. No, it’s not illegal by any means. I’ve been reading about a store called Lush for what seems like ages. It’s cosmetics store with products made of all natural ingredients. After walking in and basking in the natural fragrances floating around the room, I totally understood the reasoning behind the company name. These simple products make you feel good – literally. The associate demoed Buffy, a soap with granules in it that exfoliate on our hands along with Flying Fox, a body wash with an interesting back story, and our hands felt like silk afterwards. We played in Mermaid Water, a mix of the Big Blue Ball bath bomb and Sunny Side bubble bar and became mesmerized be the waters beautiful colors and skin softening effects. And, our favorite part, they gave us tons of samples! Not just a tiny, one time use packet, but enough for a handful of applications. I didn’t have to purchase anything to get them, even though I did (I’m treating myself to a bath in Mermaid Water for Valentine’s day, but that’s neither here nor there). And the associates were so kind and so helpful that there is no way anyone would leave that store and not come back to purchase something. Great sales tactic, if you ask me.

We ended the weekend at our favorite bakery in town, Sweet by Good Golly Miss Holly for Mini-Mania. Every Monday, they sell their delicious mini cupcakes for $1 each. As a birthday gift to the best friend a girl could ever ask for, I bought her a dozen, and ended up saving $6 on the pack.

Yeah, I saved us a lot of dough this past weekend, and we scored big, but spending time with my Bestie in celebration of her special day was priceless.

Work It Out Wednesday - My Love Affair with Vixen Fitness

Two weeks ago, I went to an open house for a women’s fitness studio in Orlando with a Groupon in hand and the determination to not spend a penny more on fitness classes. But when I walked in, met the members, the staff, and the owners, that plan went out the window. That night, I became a member of Vixen Fitness.

I started with a class called Foxy Boxing, and let me tell you, there was nothing foxy about it. I was sweating. My arms were burning. My legs felt like jell-o. The next day, I could barely move. But I didn’t give up. I signed up for Vixen Sexercise. And again, there was nothing sexy about this either. Yeah, there was some booty shaking and tracing and hip rolls which lasted for all of five minutes. The remaining 55 minutes were pure boot camp style torture. Pushups, wall sits, squats, planks. You name the form of torture, we did it. And it felt so good.

Then, there was the class everyone was dying to take, but would shy away from in fear of looking like a fool – Intro to Pole Dancing. There, a few members and I bonded over stripper shoes, fear of falling off the pole, and not knowing what on earth to expect. An hour, lots of bruises and many sore muscles later, we were giggling on the plush couches like a bunch of school girls about the reaction we’d get by showing a significant other the new moves we’d picked up.

The more I went, the more I felt like I was part of a little family. We bonded over the silliest things, but it felt good. Here I am, acting like a one woman wolf pack, and then I meet more she-wolves just like me. Honestly, Vixen Fitness makes me feel beautiful, sexy and strong like no other gym has. I may leave that place dripping sweat (which I nearly always do), but I walk out of there with a strut in my step and a sway in my hips, shoulders back and head high, because I am a Vixen!

Of course, you’re probably asking my how much it’s costing me to be a member, since I’m all about pinching a penny. When I signed up, it was $79 per month, unlimited classes. Now some of you are probably wide eyed and in shock right now. I know. It’s so not like me. Here I was with my Groupon for four classes and thought I’d be done with this studio. But it just wasn’t that simple. Vixen Fitness makes me happy. It makes me feel good. It’s the place that I go to take some much needed time for myself to take care of ME. It’s where I feel beautiful. It’s a no judgment zone and I love it.

I wouldn’t trade the experiences I’ve had, the friendships I’ve made, or the inner strength and confidence I’ve gained for anything in the world. Who cares how much it costs? To me, what I’ve gained is priceless… And if I can somehow wiggle my way in there as their new Zumba instructor after my training class in 2 weeks, even better (just sayin’)!

Another Day of Writer's Block

Over the weekend, a friend of mine called me and asked me if I wanted to go see a movie with her. It was quite a deal. Her bank sent her vouchers for two movie passes, two small drinks and a small popcorn. I don't know how on earth she managed to get that deal, but what I do know is that "No Strings Attached" is a must see movie.

Thrifty Thursday - A Shoe Lover's Dream at Ross Dress For Less

For today's edition, we're talking shoes. But not just any kind of shoes. Designer shoes! Not quite Louboutins or Manolos. I haven't found a way to get great deals on those (yet). But we're still talking shoes that retail between $75 and $140 at Macy's, Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom for at least 50% off.

Let me preface this by saying that each Ross is different and could carry different merchandise, so you may have to try a few before you find the diamond in the rough. I'm lucky enough to have the most AMAZING Ross ever less than a mile away from my house. They carry Steve Madden, Jessica Simpson, Fergie, Carlos by Carlos Santana, Betsy Johnson, Guess, and even Michael Kors. Yes, I said Michael Kors! Their inventory is beyond compare. We're talking styles that are still currently in season, selling for full price in stores.

One day, a good friend of mine pranced into work with the most adorable pair of black leather Guess pumps. "I went shopping with a friend and was suckered into buying them." She got them from the Guess store and paid $90 for them. I couldn't help but shake my head when I broke the news. "I saw them at Ross last night in black AND brown for $32.99 a pair." Her eyes widened and the next day, she waltzed in with the brown pair. Can you guess what she did? I'm sure you can and, yes, I encouraged it.

They not only carry current ladies' styles, but also current men's designer dress shoes. And I know you fellows spend a pretty penny on shoes, but you'll wear them till they fall apart. You may as well save a few bucks, have a stylish pair of well made shoes, and use the money you saved on, I don't know, the next UFC fight or something.

Here are some of my favorite finds, all for less than $35 a pair. They're all my treasures. Enjoy the hunt!

Work It Out Wednesday - From Couch to 5K

Happy Hump Day, boys and girls! I'm trying out something new today. I'm thinking of  having themed posts for each day of the week? Let me know what you think! And back to our regularly scheduled program...

Today is the 26th day of 2011. It has been said that it takes 21 consecutive days to develop a habit. How are you keeping up with your resolutions? It's okay if you fell off. Life happens. But what are you doing to get back on track? Quite frankly, I've been having trouble staying on my running schedule. I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm still busting my butt working out, but I'm doing nothing to help me achieve my goal of running a marathon. I know I'm not alone with this goal. So for those of you who enjoy this inexpensive and relaxing workout, or for those who would like to enjoy it, here is some of the research I found to get you off that couch and running a 5K.

Aside from my "Get Running" iPod app, which I LOVE, there are loads of training guides online which are really helpful. My favorite site has been Florida East Coast Runners. They have outlined everything you need to know to get running and meet your goals.
See? Everything you need, right there. Best of all- its FREE!

Now that you have the information, make a plan. If you had a plan but need to revise it, get to it. Look up running clubs in your area and get the support and motivate you need to keep going. Just don't quit. You may not see the light at the end of the tunnel just yet, but keep it up and be patient. Before you know it, you'll be crossing the finish line after 26.2 miles with a huge, victorious smile on your face.

JT's Bringing Sexy Back to Target - The Review

Earlier this month I told you about a much anticipated diffusion line for one of my favorite stores on the planet, William Rast for Target. And now it's on clearance! Oh, how I love those little red tags... Since the Target near me is running low on inventory, and because I know that diffusion lines never make it past the 50% off rack, I figured it was now or never on trying the line on for size (in more ways than one).

Anyone who's anyone knows that William Rast jeans are the closest thing you will ever find to the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants pants. The word on the street is that the original William Rast jeans that normally cost $200 fit every body type like a glove. So of course, budget conscious fashionistas were hoping that the diffusion version could hold a candle to the high-end pairs. Fortunately for our wallets, they are nearly identical, right down to the "W" stitch in the back pocket.

One of my friends gave me a heads up about the sale and raved about how wonderful the jeans fit. She's got a little more junk in the trunk than I do (and I'm jealous of that fact, by the way), so if they fit her perfectly, I was worried they wouldn't magically add something where there wasn't much. But, then, when I zipped up the skinny jeans and took a look at my backside, it looked phenomenal! I didn't know that a pair of jeans could do what a Booty Pop does without the padding. Needless to say, I was in love. Then I put on the boot cut jeans and the balance it created as incredible. The extra long length (all that were left were 34" inseams) is it perfect for my super high heels. I was in love again. And who could resist the $24.98 price tag? Down from $49.99, and nearly identical to its $200 predecessor, they most definitely get this Budgetista's seal of approval.

Bougie Budgetista Secrets: Big Apple Vacation on a Little Budget

Happy Monday, loves! Over the weekend, a reader emailed me a really great question:

“I’m planning a trip for two to New York City in October. I’m on a really tight budget, but really want to get a feel for the city. How can I enjoy my time there without going broke?”
– Cheap & Lovin’ It

Cheap,

I’m all about living the champagne lifestyle on a Kool-Aid budget, and vacationing is a HUGE part of that. There is no reason why you can’t stay in nice hotels, eat at amazing restaurants, and explore the city’s best offerings all while keeping your budget in check. When I travel, I love meandering around the city like a local would, especially in New York City. I feel it’s the only way to get the true essence of city. Sure, you could visit the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty, snap pictures of everything in sight, etc. But if you really want to experience NYC and avoid inflated tourist costs, take a few tips from the natives, and find the hole in the wall places for breakfast and lunch, take the train everywhere, and get local hook ups through your favorite Budgetista approved sites.

First, you’re going to have to get there, right? Start your search for airfare NOW! I have found that the farther in advance you book a flight, the better deals you’ll find. It’s “Supply and Demand” at its finest, ladies and gentlemen. When all the seats of the plane are empty, the prices are lower. But once the flight starts to fill up, the cost starts to go up too. Check out Kayak to compare and contrasts the prices of different airlines. Don’t be afraid to play around with options like “Flexible Dates” or “Include Nearby Airports” because you may find a gem of a deal by flying into Newark, NJ versus directly into La Guardia or JFK. The cost of getting to your hotel from either airport is pretty much the same, so try it out and see what you come up with.

Next finding a hotel. There are two ways you can do this, the easy way, and the Super Savvy Budgetista way. We’ll start with the easy route. Sites like Travelocity and Priceline will find package deals for you. In other words, they’ll find your flight and hotel for one reasonable price. Most of the time, they’re going package you with a Three- or Four-star hotel in the city, which gives you the best bang for your buck. But if you’re not picky about where you stay, you could always take the cheapest route, stay in a lower rated hotel, and use the money to spend on other activities. I did a quick search for two travelers going from Seattle to NYC, staying in the city for six nights, and the lowest price I found was $612 per person for flight, hotel, taxes and fees. Not bad for a cross country vacation, eh?

If you’re really adventurous and are willing to spend some time doing research and comparing prices and you have the patience, you could earn your Travel Budgetista Wings and become a Priceline Negotiator. Most people avoid bidding for travel because they’re afraid they’re going to get stuck on a red eye flight and in a dump of a hotel. Has it happened? Yes. Has it happened to ME? Absolutely not! All it takes is a little preliminary research. Begin at Bidding For Travel. It’s a forum where the hardcore bidders share their winning bids and strategies for getting the lowest price. There you will also find the list for the hotels that accept bids from Priceline. Once you’re on the home page, scroll down until you find the state you’re looking to stay in. In this case, we’re going to click directly on “New York State – New York City”. Find the post entitled “HOTEL LIST” there you will find the hotels listed by zone and star rating. Make note of the hotels you really want to stay in, jotting down the zone and rating. Next, scroll through the different threads. Most of the users will post the star rating, the name of the hotel and the amount they paid for the hotel in the title of the thread. Of you click on one of the posts that is on your hotel wish list, you’ll see how they were able to get that bid accepted for that price. Once you’ve determined what hotels you’re ok with staying at, and how much you’re willing to pay, proceed to Priceline and negotiate! Right now, they’re listing winning bids in New York City. A 2.5-star in SoHo went for $70 (35% savings). Some negotiators were able to score places at 61% off regular nightly rates! All it takes is a little know-how and you could win big too.

Once you’ve secured travel and lodging, you need something to do, right? Sign up to receive Groupon and LivingSocial emails specifically for NYC. Sure, you’re going to get emails for things you have no intentions of doing on a vacation (like learning to read faster), but you’re also going to get half-off gift certificates to great restaurants around town, relaxing spa treatments (your feet will need them after all that walking), and reduced admission to all types of entertainment (comedy shows, Broadway plays, Cirque du Soleil, etc). Do a little research on Urbanspoon for restaurants in the area. Sometimes, the best eats are the little hole-in-the-wall places that you’d never notice walking down the street. If you MUST do touristy things I’d suggest the Double Decker Bus Tour. It gives you the opportunity to see all the highlights of the city with the opportunity to “Hop on and Hop off” at any of the major stops. You can buy a 48 or 72 hour pass. Currently, they’re running a special on the 48 hour pass if you buy online, and once you’ve purchased, it’s good for one year.

Cabs and car services can take a HUGE bite out of your vacation budget. To get around, I suggest getting the MTA route maps and getting a 7-day pass. For $29 per person, you’ll be able to head from borough to borough day and night. No per-mile costs, no tolls, and no tipping. Ask the front desk person at your hotel for pointers on navigating the subway trains and buses.

With all the money you save by preplanning, you’ll have enough money left over to enjoy the swanky night life in the city that never sleeps.

Have a question you’d like answered? Email me!

Inspiration in Unlikely Places

I have been slacking on my posts, I know. I could give a million excuses, but I'm not going to. Especially not after having met the woman I met today.

I work in admissions for a college, so everyday, I talk to all kinds of people. Some are truly passionate about going to school, others are looking for that financial aid refund check. But every once in a while, I come across a person who is remarkably profound, impacting me in ways I never knew a complete stranger could.

It started off like any other interview with a prospective student - introductions, reasons for going to college, ultimate career goals - and she told me why she needed to get a career going, but the closing of the sentence blew me away. "I'm not working and haven't worked for over a year. I need a career. I need to make money. I haven't been able to work because I was diagnosed with leukemia. The doctors gave me 8-10 months to live. I told them that I wasn't going to let leukemia kill me, and here I am a year and a half later. I told my doctors they'll be writing about me in medical journals one day." She was diagnosed with a rare form of the disease that her doctors had only come across a handful of times (by 'handful', I mean four times, and of the four she's the only one alive). She's a single mother of three children and refused to let anything keep her from them. Not even death.

This is the power of positive thinking and a fighting spirit. When the rest of the world would have just given up on their hopes and dreams, she made new ones. She knew in her heart that she would live to see her children grow up, get married, and make her a grandmother. Having already survived thyroid cancer and melanoma, she knew nothing could stop her. I sat there on the phone with her for two hours and two minutes (yes I was counting) and was speechless. I didn't want to talk to her about school. I didn't want to give her any information or interview her for admission. I was in such awe of her achievements as survivor that I just wanted to be inspired. She didn't come from a wealthy family. She didn't go to a prestigious prep school. This was the first time she had ever even thought about really going to college. But she was quick witted, full of joy and laughter, and very, VERY feisty. I loved that about her. Life handed her a barrel of lemons and she's turned her life into a fabulous lemonade stand, sharing her pains and struggles in a way that uplifts and inspires those around her. One phone call and my whole world changed.

She's lived her life on her terms, never settling for less. She knows what she wants and will stop at nothing to get it. Tell her "No" and she'll laugh in your face and say "Watch me." After all that this woman has been through, how dare I or anyone else in this world say "I can't." Everything happens for a reason. I've slacked on my dreams for what? Time is precious. There is no better time than now to achieve my dreams. I made commitments to myself and to you. And I have to keep them. While in the hospital, after she had been told that she would inevitably die within the year from leukemia, her son came in the room and asked her "Mom, are you going to die?" She answered "No, I'm not going to let this take me away from you." He then said "Promise?" I had tears in my eyes when she said "When you make a promise like that to your children, you have to keep it." She has. And even if I never speak to her again, I know she will.

We Get By With A Little Help From Our Friends (Or Just Friendly Strangers)

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is ‘What are you doing for others?’” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Happy Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day! In honor of this holiday, I want to encourage you to make service a part of your lifestyle as well. We all have struggles – financial, emotional, mental, physical – and often, we think that our troubles are so great that no one else can relate. But here’s where we’re all wrong. My mother used to tell me to look above me and look below me. Though there’s always someone in a better position than I am, there’s also someone who has it way tougher than me. For this reason, I want you all to start thinking about the person who is “below” you and give them a helping hand. All it will cost you is some of your time.

Check out the following sites to find volunteer opportunities in your area:

Can’t make it out to an event? See if any shelters in your area are collecting clothing or food. That way, all you need to do is clean out your closet or grab some cans from your pantry and drop them off at the specified location. You may be thinking “What good do my old jeans and some cans of soup do? It’s not like it will make much of a difference.” Actually, it does. I leave you with this:

“A little and a little, collected together, becomes a great deal; the heap in the barn consists of single grains, and drop and drop make the inundation.” - Saadi

PSA: Schedule Change

Kids, I have an announcement to make. I've been watching the numbers and I've noticed that there not many folks care to read the weekend posts. From here on, The Bougie Budgetista will be running from Monday through Friday. Does this mean I won't be writing daily? Absolutely not! I'm still going to be writing, getting a leg up on the week and preparing pieces advance. If you want weekend blogs back, ask for it! But be prepared to ask for what you'd like to see, because, sometimes, writer's block gets the best of me...

I.O.U. Post

Ladies and Gents, I'm exhausted from the plethora of demo classes at Vixen Fitness tonight. Tomorrow expect a fantastic fitness blog, where I recap tonight's events, tomorrow's Zumba class, and much much more!

♥  - The Bougie Budgetista
For the past few nights I haven't had a clue what to write. Writer's block is the worst. I could tell you about some of the great deals I've found, like a $30 gift certificate to Twist Asian Fusion Restaurant for $15 on Groupon. I could talk about the free pole dancing class I'm going to tomorrow night at Vixen Fitness here in Orlando (thanks to Groupon). I could talk about the Zumba class I'm heading to on Saturday that cost me $2.50 (Groupon of course)... It's amazing how my daily Groupons have become a part of my life. I wake up and look forward to the daily deals. Groupon really understands my plight. I want to enjoy amazing restaurants. I want to be pampered at spas and salons. I want to booty shake my booty off. And Groupon allows me to fit that in my budget. It is by far one of the best Budgetista tools I've ever found. Enjoy the best your city has to offer. Soon, I'll share how to use this same sites to plan your next amazing vacation, Budgetista style.

When You Wish Upon a Star - Committing to a Goal in a Magical Place

I should be in bed, but writers block (ok, fine, I'll admit it... and Torment by Lauren Kate) have kept me up.Tomorrow morning, I need to be up early to run. You all know, it is my goal to run a marathon. And though this Disney marathon is slated for January 2012 and a bit beyond my original goal date, I'm not going to lie, I'm pretty stoked for it. As soon as the option for early registration is posted, I'm all over it. 357 days to go... Let the countdown begin!

Staying Financially Fit with Freebies

The best things in life are free. As a matter of fact one of the basic needs of life SHOULD be free, but we somehow manage to pay $2.00 per bottle for it. I was sent this video today and thought I should share it with you all. I'm all about being financially fit, so when I saw that Yahoo Finance has a section dedicated to just that, I was super stoked, to say the least. There are some things you just shouldn't pay for. Save your money for something far more fabulous!

Time is Money, So Save Some in the Kitchen!

A friend of mine once told me that he spent $600 per month on eating out. Ponder on that for a minute - $600 PER MONTH! Do you know how many Jimmy Choo's and Christian Louboutin's I could buy in a year with the amount of money he spends on FOOD?!? In short, tons. A really easy way to save both money and time is to plan meals and cook at home.

I know that cooking can take some time, but you'd be amazed at how many delicious, healthy meals can be made in 30 minutes or less. In half an hour, you could prepare food for at least two days (lunches and/or dinners), sometimes more. You'll need a few things to get started:

  • Recipes - I love browsing the clearance section of bookstores for cheap cookbooks, but then again, I love browsing for books. If "free" is more your style, then check out AllRecipies.com or Food Network's site for boatloads of delicious fare. You can narrow down recipes by ingredients, method of cooking, and cook time. Try new fare. Be adventurous. Invite friends over for a potluck and swap recipes. Any excuse for a shindig sounds good to me!
  • Crock pot - Slow cookers are a time cruncher's dream. You throw everything in, set the timer, and forget about it until it's time to eat a few hours later. Have you ever walked in a house that was just fragrant with herbs and spices that have been simmering all day? Well, once you have a slow cooker, welcome home! Those things make everyone a top notch chef. Maximum flavor and minimal effort. You can't beat that.
  • Food containers - Once you've cooked up a huge batch of food (trust me when I say it's super smart to do this), you'll need to store it somewhere. Ziploc containers are easy to come by, come in several sizes and are truly inexpensive. After you're all done cooking, separate your delicious meal into individual servings and toss them in the fridge and/or freezer for quick and easy meals. It's so much cheaper than spending $10 per day on lunch and you know exactly what you're putting into your body, which makes for a healthier you and a healthier budget.
Every minute of your day is valuable, but so is every penny in your pocket. Save a little of both by throwing on your chef's hat every once in a while. As one of my favorite Food Network star, Paula Deen says, "Best Dishes," lovies!

Extreme Couponing - A Habit We Should All Pick Up

Holy Crap! I totally didn't get a chance to post today because I was planning my gosh darn grocery shopping adventure. And an adventure it was. Two different stores, price matching, the only thing that was missing were coupons. So, the two big contenders were Publix and Walmart. Publix had great deals on healthy food (I mean, let's face it, it's resolution season; everyone's trying to get healthy) with their BOGO (Buy One Get One) sales, but Walmart is always known for their low prices. I think from here on out, I'm going to have to adopt some tips from the Krazy Coupon Lady and start my stockpile. Why should I have feminine products, body wash, toilet paper, and canned foods on every shopping list and pay full price for them when I could be getting these things for free if not close to it by using coupons? But extreme couponing is no joke! Take a looksie at TLC's special on people who obsess about saving money. But who said that was a bad thing?

Ditch the Workout, Join the Party - FOR FREE!!!

I'm a Zumbaholic, but paying for classes can get kind of expensive. When I heard that Vanessa Valentin and her Zumba crew from RhythmX studios in Orlando, FL was on Fox 35's Good Day, and that she was offering three free classes, I was all over it! Today, I checked out her class and boy, is she full of energy! The class was intense. Everyone looked like they were having a blast and there wasn't a dry shirt in sight. The choreography was a little tricky, but after a few classes at this studio, I'm sure I'll get the hang of it. But anyway, that's neither here nor there. The whole point of this is for my Orlando lovies to take advantage of this super awesome deal! If Zumba isn't your thing, check out RhythmX's website for a schedule of classes, ranging from belly dance to boot camp and everything in between... FOR FREE!

The Bougie Bookworm

If I were a multimillionaire, there are two things that would be in abundance in my home: shoes and books. However, even if money were not issue, do you think I would break my budgetista habits? Absolutely not! Now, shoes are easy to get at a discount. You should see the Michael Kors peep toe pumps I saw this week at Ross! But books, on the other hand, are a little bit trickier to get super cheap, unless you hone in on your super savvy shopper skills. For those of you who are lacking in that department, you know I'm always here to help.

Most people will search for books at Barnes and Noble, Borders and other major bookstore retailers. Those are all fine and dandy if you like coughing up full price for books. Next time you're at the check out counter and they ask you if you want to sign up for their emails, SAY YES! Yeah, so you'll get some random emails about the latest books that you have no interest in, but every once in a while, you'll get a gem of deal, like 25% off your purchase. For the rest of those emails you could care less about, there's the delete button. I will take it one step further, and encourage you to join their membership programs. Barnes and Noble's is probably the best known membership program out there. For $25, you get a one year membership offering you 40% off hardback bestsellers, 20% off adult hardbacks, and 10% of nearly everything else, plus $50 worth of coupons to use. Borders has stepped up their game, but at an even better deal. The original savings program is still available and it's free! With the Borders Rewards program, you get exclusive coupons to use in-store and online, you earn Borders Bucks for qualifying purchases, personal shopping days, deals on beverages, birthday coupons, and 30% off the list price of hardcover bestsellers. For a $20 one year membership, you get 40% off hardcover bestsellers, 30% of selected hardcovers, 10% of nearly everything else AND free shipping on online orders. But wait, it gets better! For a limited time, if you sign up for the Borders Rewards Plus program, you'll get $10 in Borders Bucks back. So basically you're getting a whole year for $10. Not bad, eh?

If you're looking to read the latest bestseller, aren't a member of any program, and can't wait to get your hands on that book, take your tush straight to Target or Walmart. I have yet to see a novel priced at the list price. With an instant savings of anywhere from 10%-30% off the cover, it's your best bet when patience isn't your virtue.

Personally, I love going to bookstores. The smell of new books, the sound of crisp pages cracking, the feel of the books in my hands make me happy. But, if you're willing to give up the experience, or modify it, you may be able to find even better deals! Go ahead, peruse the shelves armed with a pen and a pad of paper, and jot down all of the titles you want, then hit up Half.com. When they say you could get your favorite titles for 50% off or more, they're not joking. I've gotten books for as little as $0.75. I can't even get a cup of coffee for that cheap! The caveat, though, is that you do have to pay for shipping on each item, which could run between $2-3 per item. But if you order from the same seller, shipping costs drop, since they can ship multiple items to you at once. It's an awesome, inexpensive way to build your library, especially with hardback or hard-to-find books.

All my love to my fellow bookworms out there. Happy reading!
